Planning your honeymoon doesn’t have to be super stressful! Below are a few tips that can help ensure your post-wedding getaway is as perfect (and stress-free) as can be!
-
Set a budget and stick to it | Coming back from your honeymoon with a pile of debt is no way to start married life. No matter how long your engagement is, start setting aside some money for the honeymoon early. You may enjoy having a physical jar to drop money into, or you may just need to mentally note that a portion of your bank account is dedicated to the honeymoon fund. Either way, be realistic from the start about how much you can spend on your honeymoon, then do all you can to stick to the budget you set. Run some estimations for transportation, lodging, food, and entertainment, and then figure out where you can go while staying within that budgeted amount.
-
Figure out what’s really important | In other words, how do you want to spend your money? If you’re not much for sitting at the beach and sipping cocktails all day, don’t plan a trip to a place that’s known for that. There’s no rule that says your honeymoon has to look like anyone else’s, so decide what’s best for the two of you and go from there!
-
Choose a place you both want to go | Take a look at your budget and figure out how far you can go for the amount you’re willing to spend. Keep in mind that you may be able to afford plane tickets for halfway around the world if you’re willing to spend less on lodging and entertainment once you’re there. Similarly, you could really splurge and go all out on
#allthethings if you’re willing to stay a little closer to home. Get on the same page about this early on so that you both can focus on looking forward to the big trip!
-
Do things that you both will enjoy | Your honeymoon is all about bringing the two of you together for some much-needed one-on-one time after the wedding. So, as you begin planning, be intentional about doing things that both of you will enjoy. This may involve some compromising, but in all reality that’s going to be a great introduction to married life (wink wink). *Pro tip: If you have some bucket list items that you’d like to check off, your honeymoon might be the perfect time to do that!
-
Work in some surprises | Maybe you both want to pick a day and make some super-secret plans for each other. Maybe you each want to pack a little gift to be opened when you arrive to your destination. It doesn’t matter what you do, just do something that is a little bit unexpected and a lot of fun. *Pro tip: Let your hotel know ahead of time that you’re on your honeymoon. There’s a chance this will do nothing, but more times than not, the hotel staff will want to make your stay just a little extra special for you! And you’ll both be surprised by this!

Side note: Make sure to take at least a few photos and videos of the two of you on your trip! You never have to share these with anyone if you don’t want to, but they’re always fun to look back on when you’re a little older! The image in this blog post is from our honeymoon to Punta Cana in 2015!
